things i currently need #10: stuff and tings.

I’ll link to #1-9 needful things at the end of this post because it’s been a while since this feature and I miss those halcyon days.

Anywho, shall we get to it?

insouciant

I need to feel this way right now. Just pure insouciance. I tend to be tightly wound, remember? Sometimes I feel anxiety wrapping itself around my bones, as tight as the torture devices I hurled away from my life nine years ago. Le sigh. We must effect change, somehow. Which leads me to…

island

…any island. I’ll take any island. I need an island. I want to stroll inside warm waters and gaze down and see my toes waving back at me. Which won’t even weird me out because I’ve been relaxed beyond reason. I just need to find a place and breathe. My last real vacation was in 2016 when I went to Paris (all of which was documented here for your fine eyes; search Paris in the taggy section to you right), and it’s now 2018 and I can taste a getaway on my tongue. This must happen soon. I certainly don’t want you to read about anxiety-ridden Square Pegs having nervous breakdowns in the frozen food aisle of your local grocer, which, strangely, I can see happening. Why frozen foods? I feel like I could be coaxed into calming down with a carton of cookies ‘n cream ice cream.

I’m going to need the above three to kindly leave my wallet alone. But not really. When Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty makeup line launched in the fall of 2017, I initially didn’t pay attention. I was largely a MAC disciple, having found the latter to provide well for my makeup needs. And then I walked into a Sephora store and curiously asked for the ladies there to do a color match for the Fenty Beauty foundation…and then I discovered the

wonder of makeup that actually matched my skin tone. Honestly, most of us with melanin make do when it comes to makeup. We mix colors, we try not to look gray or 143 shades lighter–anything to creatively find shades that best match our skin tone and/or won’t render us into performers at your local Kabuki theater production. When I saw my face and couldn’t tell the difference between my own skin and the foundation…when I saw the smoothness and the coverage…RiRi owns me, Sephora owns me, and that entire makeup line owns me.

That’s it for now. I do need actual things, like to decorate my apartment (apartment video tour coming soon y’all), to find a cute cross-body handbag, to go shopping for new earrings (these hoops have been worn so much I thin they’re shrinking), etc. More will come later. Happy Friyay, bon weekend, onwards and upwards, and see the links below for your reading pleasure.

Fabu Fashion Monday: Sunday Edition

Hi, y’all. Welcome to Monday. Let’s move on before I complain about Mondays, shall we? Last night, a lifelong friend of mine and all around amazing woman/entrepreneur held her second annual International Natural Hair Awards (www.naturalhairawards.com). My mom and I attended and we had a blast. I knew, a few days into the event, that I wanted to wear a jumpsuit. My, how far we’ve come.

You see, fashion-wise, I had nightmares of wearing jumpsuits, needing to use the washroom, and having to quickly de-clothe in a tiny stall before my business could be done, thereby causing an emergency that would take years of bleach and therapy to heal from. But occasionally, This Square Peg moves on and stops imagining the worse. Years ago, I wore my first jumpsuit and all went well. After that, I even packed one for my trip to Vegas and again, no tiny stall emergencies ensued. So for last night’s gala, the ensemble was ready to go. Since both jumpsuits from the past have gotten a bit large on me, that Saturday, I went to my usual haunt, Ross, to find a new one. One thing about Ross: yes, you may have to search the racks, but you can almost always depend on finding a jumpsuit. And I found two. After trying both on, I went with the one that wouldn’t require me to wear additional clothing underneath to cover up the ladies (the V-neck was celebrity starlet deep, my goodness). It also had pretty designs on the shoulders and across the square neckline. To dress it up, I paired it with a snazzy faux leather jacket and a lovely necklace that my sissy reluctantly lent to me. Done and done. See pics below.

As you can see, I went with all black everything. Regarding makeup:

  • Always Red Cream Lip Stain by Sephora for my usual red lippy
  • MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation for the face
  • An assortment of eye shadows (in the close-up, you’ll see that I’ve been experimenting with cream eye shadow; this one is from e.l.f. cosmetics, the Smudge Post Cream Eyeshadow, but the specific shade escapes me)
  • Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

And there you have it. Good times were had.

How was your weekend?

Fabu Fashion #1: Casual Friyay

The “yay” is intentional. I’m just happy it’s the end of the week. *exhale*

I decided to start the Fabu Fashion week feature today, since I had my iPhone with me in my usual studio (the ladies room) and decided to snap a few photos. Warning: you’ll be seeing a lot of this studio in the coming days, as it has the best lighting. Well, it’s the lesser of two evils when it comes to lighting; the other ladies loo resembles the inner sanctum of a comic book villain, it’s so dark. I digress. Naturally. Here we go.

Friday1
No, that’s not an enormous pimple you’re seeing to the right of my lip. The mirror had a pesky smudge.

Friday2

Friday3

Simple choices for a casual Friday at the OK Corral: black jeans, one of my favorite blouses, flats, and red lipstick to bring a little color in.

Details:

Pants – Forever 21
Blouse – I honestly don’t remember. But if you’d like to know why I can’t remember, take note of that gray curl in the last picture above my right ear. There you go.
Shoes – see above. I think it was DSW though.
Lippy: Sephora Cream Lip Stain, Always Red. What I love about this lip stain is that it goes on silky and light, and dries matte. So perfect.

That’s that for Fabu Fashion. Wherever you are this Friyay, I bid you a good day and a bon weekend.

“You Always Wear Red Lipstick…”

“…and it inspired me to buy some and wear it whenever I go out.”

My sister said these words to me the other evening as we headed out to dinner. Nice, huh? (Incidentally, she was indeed wearing her new burgundy lippy from MAC, and she wore it proudly.) Just reminded me that gone are the days when I wanted to hide my lips however and whenever I could. Now I clothe them in bright red. What’s even cooler is that my sister has the same plumpalicious lips as I do, and I love that she’s coming out of her comfort zone.

And she wasn’t kidding about me always wearing my red lippy…

So other than Ruby Woo, my new preferred red lippy is Cream Lip Stain from the Sephora Collection in Always Red. In fact, I’m wearing that shade in most of the photos above. And I have to tell you that this red addiction continues: I just found two more colors that I want to try out. Yikes…
